📢 4/19/2021: We just switched to a new webpage for the 3D printing request. https://www.library.virginia.edu/services/3d-printing/ The process is almost identical to the current one described on notion. Please visit the new link to submit your requests in the future.

💡 Below is the 3D Printing Request process for Academic-related projects only. If you are interested in printing personal projects, please check the information here. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

Step 1: Review our studio policies carefully and sign the user agreement.

💡 We will only process your request if we have your signed user agreement in the record. You only need to sign it once for the Spring 2021 semester.

💡 Please note that we normally only print in PLA. If you need other filament types, please setup a consultation by emailing [email protected]

Step 2: Review our studio calendar and reserve your slot.

You can reserve your slot ahead of time if you know when your model maybe ready for printing. Please make a conservative estimate and only reserve the number of slots as needed.

💡 Due to limited staffing, we can only do 7 prints on average weekly, so we have 7 slots available for each week. You need to send us your files by the Monday of your reserved week. If you can't send your files on time, we may cancel your request for that week and you will need to reserve another slot in the following weeks.

💡 Each slot can only do one printing request that is under 10 hours. If you model requires more printing time, you can slice it into smaller pieces and then reserve multiple slots as needed. You can also reserve a consultation with us if you need help on this.

Step 3. Submit your request through the form

Please complete this request form and upload your files through the form each time you request a 3D print.

💡 You only need to submit this form when you are ready to upload your 3D model. Make sure to export your 3D model as .stl file. If you have a preference of printer for your request and you know how to use the slicing software, you can send us your sliced files directly.

💡 Please evaluate your model and make sure 3D printing is the best tool to complete your project. 3D printing is not a tool that works for all projects, and Laser cutter and CNC routers are better alternatives for certain projects. If you don't understand the differences between these tools, you can check out this video . If you don't know where to find CNC or laser cutters, you can check the makergrounds website for more information.

💡 Your Reservation Week Date refers to the Monday of your reserved week. e.g. Mary_2/15.

Step 4. Send an email to our staff to let us know you submitted the request

💡 Our request form system does have an automatic alerting function, however, it doesn't work consistently. To make sure we receive your request, you need to send our staff an email and provide the following information. We know this may seems like extra work on your end, but we hope to learn more in details about your project and request to make sure your model will be printed out successfully. Thank you for your understanding!
